Tree Warden wanted to fill temporary appointment through May 2025

Selectboard seeking qualified individuals

The Town of Montague Selectboard is inviting interested individuals to express interest in serving a temporary appointment to the vacant Tree Warden position until a new Tree Warden can be elected at the May election.

The Tree Warden is an elected position pursuant to Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 41, Section 106. The duties and responsibilities of the Tree Warden shall conform to the Massachusetts General Law Chapter 87 and shall include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Care, control, and management of all public trees, shrubs and growths within the Town; and the care, control, and management of trees in public parks or open places under the jurisdiction of the park commissioners.
  • Expenditure of funds for public tree planting and maintenance
  • Enforcement of the provisions of the Montague Public Tree Protection Bylaw and Massachusetts General Law Chapter 87;
  • Coordination with the Highway Department, Planning Department, Parks and Recreation, Planning Board, and the Montague Tree Advisory Committee on matters related to urban forestry and public tree management;
  • Develop regulations or policies for the care and preservation of public trees

The interim appointed Tree Warden will receive a monthly stipend of $147 for services through the May 2025 Town election. The ideal interim tree warden will consider a longer term role in the position.
