Marriage Licenses

MARRIAGE INTENTIONS & MARRIAGE LICENSES: (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY)

In Massachusetts, any couple can get married as long as each person is 18 or older and is not currently married. Please call 413-863-3200 ext. 203 to schedule an appointment to complete marriage intentions.

  • Both parties will need to attend the appointment and have valid ID.
  • There is a mandatory three (3) day waiting period, not including the day of the application, between filing marriage intentions and being able to be wed

MARRIAGE INTENTIONS - Please call to make an appointment (413) 863-3200 ext. 203

When you arrive at Town Hall together (the only exceptions are if one partner is in the active, full-time military or is incarcerated), you will both need to provide:

  • Valid identification (this includes passports, driver's licenses, state ID's or military ID's).
  • Your current legal names, and what last names you will use after marriage.
  • Your current physical address.
  • Your dates of birth and where you were born.
  • The names of your parents, including birth names and whether or not your parents were married when you were born.
  • Information regarding previous marriages, if any.
  • Your Social Security numbers (if you do not have a Social Security number, you have to write down why - for example, it was never issued or you are not a U.S. resident).
  • The $40 fee, payable by cash, check or money order made out to the Town of Montague

Additional instructions will be given to you at your appointment.

MARRIAGE LICENSES

After the three-day waiting period, one of the people being married must pick up the license at the Clerk's Office. Please note: in Massachusetts, a marriage license must be used for a ceremony within 60 days of filing the marriage intention.

The Clerk's Office can provide certified copies of marriage licenses for people who applied for their marriage intention in Montague; we do not have records of marriages that occurred in Montague if the intentions were not filed here.

If you have questions about obtaining a copy of your marriage license, please contact the office at (413) 863-3200 ext. 203 or by email.
